How Concavity Creates Curvature

Curvature is not created by volume alone.

One of the most misunderstood ideas in body contouring is that a more powerful curve comes from simply adding more projection. In reality, a convex area becomes more visually striking when it is balanced beside a carefully designed concavity.

Shape Through Contrast

Curves are created by contrast. The eye reads a silhouette by the transitions within it, not by any single high point.

A well-defined waist makes the hip appear fuller. A refined lower back makes the gluteal region appear more projected. The relationship between the areas is what creates the impression of shape.

Concavity Beside Convexity

In the S-Curve philosophy, the surgeon does not think only about where to add. The surgeon thinks about where to create controlled concavity so that the adjacent convexity reads more clearly.

This is why proportion matters more than volume. Two patients can receive similar volume and achieve very different results depending on how the surrounding transitions are handled.

Proportion Over Volume

Designing a silhouette means treating the body as one continuous shape rather than a set of isolated targets. The waist, hips, lower back, gluteal region and thighs all participate in the final result.

When these relationships are respected, the outcome looks balanced from every angle rather than exaggerated from one.

Design the Silhouette

This relationship between shape, transition and proportion is central to the S-Curve philosophy taught at the Beverly Hills Body Academy.
