What Residency May Not Teach About Body ContouringLearn why advanced body contouring techniques often require continued education beyond surgical residency.

Residency provides the foundation of surgical education.
It teaches anatomy, operative principles, patient care and the fundamentals required to practice safely.
However, many advanced body contouring techniques continue to evolve after formal residency training.
Dr. Ghavami explains that many surgeons considered experts in body contouring did not learn every modern nuance during residency.
They built on the principles and foundations provided by their predecessors.
This distinction is important.
Advanced education does not replace residency. It develops from the foundation residency provides.
Modern body contouring includes areas that may not have been widely established during a surgeon’s original training.
These can include:
As patient expectations change, surgeons must continue learning.
Technical movements can be demonstrated relatively quickly.
Judgment takes longer to develop.
Surgeons must learn how to determine:
These decisions are refined through experience and exposure to complex cases.
There is rarely only one way to approach a surgical problem.
Learning from multiple experienced surgeons can help attendees understand where techniques differ and where core principles remain consistent.
The Beverly Hills Body Academy brings together Dr. Ghavami and Dr. Hoyos, who have developed different approaches to many of the same body contouring challenges.
Dr. Ghavami described the academy as being similar to a mini-residency distilled into two to three days.
The intention is to concentrate years of experience into:
Surgical education does not end at graduation.
The field changes. Patients change. Technology changes. New complications and new opportunities emerge.
Continued education allows surgeons to refine their techniques while remaining grounded in anatomy and safety.
The Beverly Hills Body Academy takes place November 20–22, 2026.
